Natural Hair Essentials // Raw Shea Butter
20:00
Shea butter is a staple amongst many naturals. If you don't have pure shea butter in your hair basket, I am sure that you have a product containing it (e.g. Shea Moisture hair products).
This cream or ivory-coloured butter hails from East and West Africa. It is a fatty butter and is rich in Vitamins A and E.
It is widely known for it's moisturising properties and also protects our hair from UV radiation. With the Australian summer kicking in (as I type this it is currently 36*C or 97*F where I live), this butter is everything! It keeps my hair soft and prevents it from being a crunchy mess after a day in the sun. I also feel like it has contributed to my hair retention so far.
I use the Shea butter as a conditioner/sealant. I love to whip the butter with Olive Oil, Grapeseed oil, Avocado Oil, Castor Oil and Coconut Oil. Yes that is a lot of oil! I add a tablespoon of each to about 100g of Shea butter. This ensures that my mix is soft and creamy.
I find that in summer the butter melts quickly making it easier to whip. Apparently it hardens up in winter time, so I will probably have to add a little more Coconut Oil next winter.
Since this was my first experience with raw Shea Butter, I was not sure what to expect. But so far I can say that the product is great! It has the distinctive nutty-smell and the texture is beautiful. I have no doubt that it is indeed raw Shea Butter.
If you live in Australia, this is a great source for your Shea butter (yes, they ship internationally too :) ).
Have you used raw Shea butter before? Where do you get it from and how do you use it on your locks?
Happy hairdays,

Logistics
I get my raw Shea Butter from Deluxe Shea butter. The company is based in Adelaide and they source their Shea from Ghana. I ordered 1kg for $18 AUD(with $10 shipping) in August.![]() |
